3.2px) * 0.836), 22px);font-style:normal;font-weight:700;line-height:1;text-transform:uppercase\">The study in a few words<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#274a7d\">SHAPERS is a pragmatic study meaning a study designed to help choose between standard treatment options, involving several centres in Belgium, which will include around 230 patients to compare two treatments that are considered standard.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#274a7d\">In total, the study participation will last around 6 years, with approximately 5 years of post-treatment follow-up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#274a7d\">The main procedures that will be carried out are identical to those that form part of the usual treatment (without participation in the study), i.e medical consultations, blood tests, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the rectum and thoraco-abdomino-pelvic CT scan or thoracic CT scan and abdomino-pelvic MRI.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#274a7d\">On the other hand, patients will have to complete 4 quality of life questionnaires which are specific to the study and take around 10 to 15 minutes to complete, for a total of 3 times during the study and 13 times during follow-up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#274a7d\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color\" id=\"Rfze0kDDPpjeagy7\" style=\"color:#274a7d;font-size:clamp(14.642px, 0.915rem + ((1vw - 3.2px) * 0.836), 22px);font-style:normal;font-weight:700;line-height:1;text-transform:uppercase\">Objective:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#274a7d\">The aim of the study is to demonstrate that a treatment with radio(chemo)therapy alone before surgery could be as effective as a \u00ab triple treatment \u00bb (radio(chemo)therapy, and chemotherapy before surgery), while reducing adverse effects in elderly patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#274a7d\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-background is-vertical is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-f02cd050 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\" style=\"border-radius:40px;background-color:#1e4b6e;padding-top:48px;padding-right:48px;padding-bottom:48px;padding-left:48px\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-white-color has-text-color\" id=\"Rfze0kDDPpjeagy7\" style=\"font-size:clamp(14.642px, 0.915rem + ((1vw - 3.2px) * 0.836), 22px);font-style:normal;font-weight:700;line-height:1;text-transform:uppercase\">Procedures and conduct of the study:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#274a7d\">Participants will be included in the study for approximately 6 years. This period includes the selection, treatment and follow-up phases:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-b24dc81181e5b1aa892ed2b8f113feee is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\" style=\"color:#274a7d\"><summary><strong>Selection phase (approximately 28 days):<\/strong><\/summary>\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-459c7637a81079bfa01f112b56b6c485 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#274a7d\">Once the informed consent form has been signed, a number of tests will be carried out to check that the patient meets all the conditions required to take part in the study. During the selection phase, the following tests will be carried out: blood test, MRI of the rectum, thoraco-abdomino-pelvic CT scan or thorax CT scan and abdomino-pelvic MRI. These tests are identical to those performed as part of routine management (with participation in the study). In addition to these standard tests, patients will be asked to complete 4 quality of life questionnaires, which take around 10 minutes to complete. If the patient meets all the inclusion conditions, he or she will enter the study and begin the treatment phase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-b05160386dcb9556f7121644ebb1ecdd wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#274a7d\"><\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-fbcba1f777a5c8352d8c27d37f4ff333 is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\" style=\"color:#274a7d\"><summary><strong>Treatment phase:<\/strong><\/summary>\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#274a7d\">Depending on which arm of the study the patient is randomised to, the patient will receive one of the treatments explained below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#274a7d\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Conventional neoadjuvant Therapy (CNT): this consists of radiotherapy or radio(chemo)therapy followed by the surgery. Only if necessary, will the patient will receive chemotherapy after surgery.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Total neoadjuvant Therapy (TNT): this consist of a treatment that combines chemotherapy and radio(chemo)therapy before the surgery.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#274a7d\">For patients who show a complete clinical response, i.e. if several criteria indicate that the tumour has completely disappeared, a \u00ab watch and wait \u00bb approach is authorised instead of surgery. If the patient is ultimately not operated on, close follow-up will be required (which is normal clinical practice).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#274a7d\"><\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-0c9384e48f3f19d15e4f92b9af3fb657 is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\" style=\"color:#274a7d\"><summary><strong>Follow-up phase (5 years):<\/strong><\/summary>\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#274a7d\">Once the treatment has been completed and the end-of-treatment visit is over, the patient will enter the 5-year follow-up phase.
